Tuition and Fees

Tuition for UW Independent Learning is a flat rate of $327 per credit hour for all credit-eligible courses and $25 per Continuing Education Unit (CEU) for professional development courses. Tuition is subject to change at any time.

As this is a distance education program, you won’t pay segregated fees — fees in addition to tuition that cover costs for student activities, facility maintenance, and campus operations — when you register in an Independent Learning course. However, each course registration requires a one-time, non-refundable administrative fee of $75. You’ll also be responsible for course material costs, such as textbooks and access to online e-learning platforms. These costs vary from course to course.

Tuition for credit-eligible courses $327 per credit hour
Tuition for CEU $25.00 per CEU
Administrative fee $75.00 per course registration

Please note there will be a $20 service fee on all returned checks.

Fax

Students can fax their credit card information to our secure fax line: (608) 262-4096. Be sure to include name, credit card number, expiration date, and a statement of what is being paid.

Course Transfers and Extensions

The flexibility of our program allows you to transfer from one Independent Learning course to another should you find yourself enrolled in the wrong level course or thinking another might better fit your needs. Because we recognize that life often brings unexpected detours and delays, you can also extend your course expiration date to allow more time to complete your course. All courses allow two 3-month course extensions. Learn more about course transfers and extensions and their associated fees in the Program Policies section.

Course Transcripts

Students may request an official transcript from our UW Extended Campus Office of the Registrar upon completion of an Independent Learning course. Our transcript service is included as part of the course administrative fee you pay up front at the time of registration and covers the lifetime cost of all requested transcripts sent via regular mail. Learn more about course transcripts and associated fees in the Request Transcripts section.

Financial Aid and Tuition Waivers

Independent Learning is unable to offer direct financial assistance to students. However, students who are currently enrolled as a full-time student at any UW System institution (other than UW-Stout), may be eligible for enrollment in an Independent Learning course without paying additional tuition in accordance with UW System Administrative Policy 805, section 6, A, A.15 on Multiple Campus Enrollments. Learn more about UW tuition waivers in the Full-Time UW Students section.

1098-T Tuition Statement Forms

In accordance with federal regulations, the UW Independent Learning program is not eligible to issue 1098-T tuition statement tax forms to students since our program is not a designated Title IV institution. UW Independent Learning is not eligible to participate in the U.S. Department of Education student aid programs as we are not an accredited degree program, but rather, an academic program that offers individual college-level courses. Please reach out to your financial advisor or tax consultant for more information regarding 1098-T tuition statement tax forms.
