Enrollment Options

There are different ways you can enroll to take UW coursework with Independent Learning while in high school. Eligibility and the amount of tuition your family will pay will be different for each option. Review the program options below to learn more.

Option 1: Youth Options

The Youth Options program is a State of Wisconsin program that enables academically talented public school 11th and 12th grade students to enroll in UW Extension’s Independent Learning program for the purpose of taking college courses for both high school and college credit. College courses, in which the student hopes to enroll through Youth Options, cannot be comparable to a course already offered in the high school and the course must qualify for high school credit. Tuition, fees, and book costs are paid by the school district. In order to enroll in the Youth Options Program, students must seek approval from their school board no later than March 1 for the fall semester or October 1 for the spring semester. There is no opportunity for summer session enrollment.

Option 2: Course Options

The Course Options program is a State of Wisconsin program that enables public school students to take up to two courses per term at UW Extension’s Independent Learning program. Students must be approved for Course Options by the school district in which they reside and admitted to the university if seeking to take coursework. The school district is responsible for paying 50% of tuition and fees. UW Extension covers the remaining 50% of tuition and fees. Students are not responsible for payment of any tuition or fees.

Option 3: Directly with UW Extension

High school students who do not qualify Wisconsin’s Youth or Course Options program or who do not wish to enroll via those programs may enroll in any Independent Learning course they’ve met the prerequisites for. Students are responsible for 100% of course tuition, fees and course materials.
